Look at me! He cries, juggling snowballs until they smash into his nose and he falls face-first into powdery snow. Katara laughs, and fixes her eyes on him while the clucking midwife extracts an inch-long splinter from the soft surface of her chubby palm.
Look at me! He says, imitating the penguins, strutting over the ice with arms flapping and legs bent at the knee. Katara giggles, and watches only him while the tribesmen snap the necks of struggling fish and toss them lifeless to the ground.
Look at me, he whispers, making faces alternately sad and happy with his boomerang, beneath the concealing overhang of snow. Katara smiles, and stares at him resolutely as behind them fire sears the night and the snow turns black and red.
